Cow Shelter, Newtown, Loughcrew

This primitive classical cow shelter (a protected structure) is one of an interesting group of sophisticated farm buildings at the home farm associated with Loughcrew Demesne attributed to the classical architect Charles Robert Cockerell. The building was in a very advanced state of disrepair on the brink of collapse necessitating extensive conservation work. Essentially the structure needed to be carefully propped and then dismantled, broken stone columns and decayed timber roof trusses were repaired using conservative methods and the structure carefully re-assembled and re-slated. The works were grant aided under the Heritage Council REPS 4 Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme.
